_C_o_u_n_t _R_u_m_f_o_r_d_'_s _F_r_i_c_t_i_o_n _D_a_t_a

_D_e_s_c_r_i_p_t_i_o_n_:

     Data on the amount of heat generated by friction was
     obtained by Lord Rumford in 1798.

_D_e_t_a_i_l_s_:

     A bore was fitted into a stationary cylinder and
     pressed against the bottom by a screw.  The bore was
     turned by a team of horses for 30 minutes, after which
     Lord Rumford ``suffered the thermometer to remain in
     its place nearly three quarters of an hour, observing
     and noting down, at small intervals of time, the tem-
